Valentine’s Day has changed slightly from its original ritual and matchmaking. The earlier days of Lupercalia in Roman history marks the beginning. Although Tiberius Claudius Caesar Augustus Germanicus, Emperor Claudius, was an accomplished historian and completed the Roman annexation of Britain, he was unlucky in love. His betrothals were six in total. The last engagement was pivotal to his successor according to Andrews’ account. Emperor Claudius was a Roman Emperor between 41 Common Era (CE) and 54 CE. Wait! The origin of Valentine’s Day is contributed to Claudius II Gothicus. Marcus Aurelius Claudius Gothicus, Claudius II Gothicus or Claudius the Goth, was responsible for imprisonment and the martyrdom of a Roman priest- Valentine- on February 14, 269 CE. Claudius II Gothicus was an accomplished Illyrian Emperor. In the 21st century, Singles Awareness Day (SAD) is a recognizable concurrence with Valentine’s Day according to Helen Fisher, a sociologist at Rutgers University. Hackers are attuned to habits and to rituals of SAD and have created a surfeit of zombies for the occasion. Zombies, also known as robots (bots), are fitted with malware- often scripts- to tempt, download, corrupt and extort. Morgan’s title amplifies the problem on Valentine’s day, “‘Zombies bots’ are coming for the lonely singles on Valentine’s Day.” Bot traffic is problematic due to its nature to exploit technical naivety. Incapsula’s 2014 Annual Report on bot traffic revealed that bot traffic accounted for 56% of all web traffic. Furthermore, the 2014 report establishes the percentages of bad bots (29%) and good bots (27%). Bad bots are comprised of impersonators, hacking tools, scrapers and spammers. It is encouraging to learn that bot traffic, which leads to the creation of more jobs in cyber security, is growing proportional to human traffic. Comparing Incapsula’s 2014 report to its 2016 report, bot traffic comprises 52% of all web traffic. Good bots were a contributing factor. A concerning fact- in the latter report-revealed that 94.2% of websites experienced bot attacks. There is just too much sugar in Valentine’s Day candy.
