The Big Business of Data Privacy: 3B

Who wrote “There’s No Business Like Show Business?”  It was Irving Berlin who had written “There’s No Business Like Show Businessfor the 1946 musical “Annie Get Your Gun.”  In contrast to this jovial line, the Big Business of Data Privacy line can be used to describe the pretense of data privacy by large entities.   Or, the proof of the pudding is in the eating.   While identity theft occurs to individuals, many don’t conceive data privacy is of paramount importance and protection is mission critical.  Facebook, Equifax and Yahoo have offered conciliatory statements for being complicit in failing to disclose timely security breaches. Spring has sprung, and summer is likely another scorcher in the South.  Scientific evidence for warming of the climate system is unequivocal according to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.   Climate change and security breaches are not the same fruits; however, security breaches are devastating on humans as extreme high and low temperatures.  Gingerly, organizations shall continue to experience unabated breaches.  Perhaps heavier fines can deter massive data breaches.  Although Yahoo had been fined $35M for failure to disclose the massive breach in 2014, hackers netted 3B users’ accounts in 2013 as reported by Newman.  Yahoo’s 2013 breach is trending as the largest cyber breach in the 21st century, which is half of the world’s human population.  The 2016 FriendFinder Networks vulnerability exposed 412M users’ accounts that spanned two decades and is trending as the second largest cyber breach in the 21st century.  Finally, the Commonwealth Bank (CBA), Australia’s largest bank, confirmed a 2016 data breach that affected nearly half of Australians. The number of affected accounts is between 12 and 20 million. CBA shared the information with Australia Privacy Commissioner, yet CBA failed to disclose the incident to customers according to Reilly.  All hands are needed on deck for climate change, cyber security and ethical hacking.
